Historic Harbor Hideaway

The homeowner contacted a landscape architect with the goal of renovating their backyard space to embody the history of old Baltimore while maintaining a modern aesthetic in their unicorn-like property in Federal Hill. The property is a traditional brick rowhome that came bundled with an overgrown side lot. Back in the 1800s, the side lot housed a pub and a gun store. These two buildings were eventually demolished and spent years as open yard space for the clients, which led to their vision of creating this beautiful space.

The project features two natural cleft bluestone patios that serve as an entertainment area and a formal dining area. The entertainment is nestled by a custom-built cedar pavilion that the homeowner built. The pergola has retractable shade sails that provide the perfect balance of sun and shade for a formal evening dinner. A mix of colorful landscape plantings provides pops of color throughout all seasons, while providingĀ a lower-maintenance landscape that blends with the natural aesthetic of the rest of the project.

A small synthetic turf strip does a great job atĀ breaking up the hardscapes and is also a comfortable space for the dog to relax and play. This project recently won a bronze award through NALP (National Association of Landscape Professionals), and we are hoping to receive more awards from local organizations in the near future!
